The town of Niebla, in Huelva, breathes a sigh of relief following the stabilization of the forest fire in the Raboconejo area, which has impacted over 38,000 hectares.

After ten days of intense work, emergency teams have successfully stabilized the forest fire that ravaged the Niebla area in Huelva. This development permits the reopening of affected roads and the return of the 417 residents who were preemptively evacuated.
The acting Government delegate in Andalusia, Francisco Toscano, reported on Sunday that the fire, which has covered a perimeter of 210 kilometers, has been stabilized and downgraded to Level 1 of the Operational Emergency Plan. Although the fire is not completely extinguished, efforts will now focus on consolidating control lines and preventing re-ignitions.
As a consequence of the improved situation, a progressive withdrawal of personnel from the Military Emergencies Unit (UME), forest brigades, and some aerial resources from the Ministry for Ecological Transition will commence. The Civil Guard will maintain its active collaboration in resettlement efforts to ensure an orderly and guaranteed return for residents.

"They were there, amidst smoke, flames, and exhaustion, putting all their effort into protecting our environment and, above all, our neighbors. Niebla will never forget that when the fire pressed hard, you were here. Farewell, UME. And thank you for so much."

Niebla City Council
UME members were bid farewell with applause and cheers by the residents of Niebla, who gathered in the streets to thank them for their professionalism and bravery. The City Council highlighted the crews' dedication in fighting the fire, emphasizing that they "leave behind something much more important than their work: the affection, respect, and gratitude of an entire town."
Despite the stabilization, firefighting and surveillance operations will continue to eradicate potential hotspots and secure the control lines. Toscano noted that phases of definitive extinction, damage assessment, and subsequent recovery of the affected regions in Huelva and Seville still lie ahead, reaffirming the Spanish Government's commitment to the residents and the emergency.
Finally, emphasis was placed on the need for reforestation efforts to consider the reality of climate change, aiming to prevent future environmental disasters.
