The incident dates back to February 27, when the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard received a citizen tip-off about animals found inside a container in a rural area of Almonte. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the situation, finding the seven puppies, with only two still alive.
Subsequent investigations led officers to locate a female dog nearby showing clear signs of having recently given birth. Suspecting she might be the mother of the puppies, DNA samples were taken to determine kinship.
With the cooperation of the Almonte City Council, the samples were sent to a specialized canine genetics laboratory in Xátiva, Valencia. The results confirmed that the identified dog was the mother of the puppies, allowing officers to advance the investigation and locate the animal's owner.
The owner has been formally investigated as the alleged perpetrator of an animal cruelty offense. The corresponding proceedings have been forwarded to the competent judicial authority, which will be responsible for determining the legal liabilities arising from this regrettable event.
This case once again highlights the importance of citizen collaboration in detecting such behaviors and protecting animals, as well as the actions of law enforcement to prosecute these crimes.
