El Rocío is experiencing a moment of anticipation with the opening of its Jubilee Year, a historic event that coincides with the imminent arrival of the Virgen del Rocío in Almonte. The village is preparing to welcome pilgrims and brotherhoods during this special time, which will last until May 16, 2027.
The opening ceremony took place at the Sanctuary, presided over by the Bishop of Huelva, Santiago Gómez Sierra, following a procession that departed from the Real del Rocío. This Jubilee Year is the first granted for the occasion of the Virgin's arrival in Almonte, marking a milestone for Rocío devotion.
El Rocío Chico, which this year regains its full dimension after the pandemic, is celebrated in the days leading up to the arrival. The tradition, commemorating a vow made centuries ago, brings generations together around the Virgin.
On August 16, 17, and 18, the triduum preceding the arrival will be held. On Wednesday, August 19, at 10:00 AM, the Solemn Vow Mass will take place, also presided over by the bishop. The exact moment the Virgin leaves the Sanctuary for Almonte will be determined by the day's events.
The village is thus transforming into a pilgrimage destination, welcoming faithful seeking to experience this jubilee period and partake in its associated spiritual graces. The Virgin will be away from her hermitage for a significant portion of this special year.
