Emergency services are working intensely to control the flames affecting a plastic storage area. The combustion of these materials has caused a dense black smoke cloud that has put authorities and the nearby population on alert.
“"If you see a smoke plume, DO NOT BE ALARMED, emergency services are already acting on site."
The Local Police of Almonte has issued an urgent warning about the smoke, describing it as «potentially toxic». Given the nature of the old landfill with plastic materials, combustion releases harmful substances, requiring extreme caution.
Residents in nearby areas have been advised to keep doors and windows closed, avoid ventilating homes, and not approach the fire perimeter to facilitate the work of the firefighting teams.
The firefighting operation includes 12 firefighters from the Provincial Consortium and support from the INFOCA Plan, which has mobilized a heavy helicopter, several fire engines, and reinforcement brigades. Their objective is to create an «invisible wall» to protect nearby vegetation, especially given the proximity of forest mass and the A-484 road, at kilometer 14, where visibility has been reduced.
Although extinction is the current priority, initial investigations into the origin of the fire have already begun. Local authorities do not rule out possible intentionality behind the incident, highlighting the danger of industrial fires in protected natural environments.
