The city of Lepe has commenced its grand day commemorations with the addition of former mayor Juan Manuel González's portrait to the municipal gallery, in an emotional event preceding the awards ceremony.

The commemorative events for Lepe Day began this Friday with the placement of the portrait of Juan Manuel González, former mayor of the town, in the plenary hall of the Lepe Town Hall. The artwork, created by local painter Alberto Muriel, has been incorporated into the historical gallery of mayors displayed at the Lepe City Council.

"Today we expand our institutional history with the incorporation of Juan Manuel González Camacho's portrait into our gallery of Lepe's historical mayors, and we are not just placing a painting, but paying tribute to thirteen years of an exemplary career."

For her part, the Deputy Mayor of Presidency, Ana Delgado, highlighted the “symbolism of the simple and emotional act,” emphasizing about the honoree that “when one is mayor, one is mayor forever, and your nobility, simplicity, and integrity precede you.”
Juan Manuel González Camacho, born in 1961, joined the City Council Plenary in 2011 as deputy mayor, taking over the mayoralty two years later. He won the municipal elections in 2015 with an absolute majority, a result he revalidated in 2019 and 2023. He resigned from his position in an extraordinary plenary session on October 4, 2024, and currently serves as a senator.
The Lepe City Council has organized a series of events for 2026 to commemorate Lepe Day and highlight the historical significance of this date for the municipality. Among the activities is the inauguration of the exhibition The History of Lepe in Comic on Wednesday, April 15, at 11:00 AM, based on the work by Tomás Rodríguez Villanueva. This exhibition, which recounts Lepe's history from Phoenician and Roman times, will be open to the public in Plaza España until Sunday, April 19.
On the same April 15, at 7:30 PM, the Municipal Theater Mayor Juan Manuel Santana of Lepe will host the awards ceremony for the City Honors and Distinctions 2026. Three city medals will be awarded to the Club de Atletismo Ciudad de Lepe and to the companies Gonca and Talleres Hermanos López. Additionally, Paco Toscano Alonso, José Antonio Sánchez Araújo, and José Esteban Conesa will be named adopted sons, and Paco Silveira García, Pepa Mendoza Abreu, and María Bella Morgado will be recognized as favorite sons/daughters.
This 2026 marks 61 years since Lepe was granted the title of City, a recognition awarded on April 9, 1965, by the Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Minister of the Interior, and officially formalized on April 15 of the same year.
