The Parish of Nuestra Señora del Mar and the local Sacramental Brotherhood have organized this religious event to pray for the viability of an activity that is essential for the local economy. The call reflects the concern of maritime professionals regarding a season that has recorded fishing levels well below normal.
Although a slight recovery in catches has been observed in recent days, the sector remains cautious. The fourteen vessels of the Association of Southern Mackerel Producers (Asprocasur), operating from Isla Cristina, Punta del Moral, and Punta Umbría, continue to constantly assess the situation to decide whether to continue fishing operations.
The sector's concern is based on high operating costs, including fuel and vessel maintenance. Fishing for this species is a key economic driver on the western coast of Huelva, where production figures last year were significantly higher than current ones.
