The campaign, launched by the body dependent on the Ministry of the Interior, aims to remind drivers of the importance of maintaining full attention while driving to ensure safety on public roads. Distractions are identified as a key factor in a significant percentage of fatal traffic accidents.
According to DGT data, using a mobile phone while driving multiplies the risk of an accident. Dialing a number can increase the danger up to twelvefold, while reading or writing messages multiplies it by six. Fatigue and drowsiness are also contributing factors, accounting for 7% and 8% of fatal accidents in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
Improper use of mobile phones while driving remains the most common punishable distraction, according to recent control campaigns. Numerous town councils, through their local police forces, are collaborating in these checks on urban roads.
To avoid these distractions, it is recommended to use mobile phones only for emergencies and with the vehicle stopped. The DGT also emphasizes the importance of resting adequately before driving, avoiding alcohol, heavy meals, and certain medications. It is advisable not to smoke during the journey and to stop if feeling drowsy. For managing the radio or GPS, systems integrated into the steering wheel are recommended, and programming a route before starting the trip is considered dangerous.
This intensified surveillance extends to urban areas, with the collaboration of municipal police forces. The DGT thanks them for their contribution to road safety and complements the work of officers on the road with automated means, such as cameras to monitor mobile phone and seatbelt use.
