Once again this summer, Sanlúcar de Barrameda is participating in the 'Green Flags' campaign promoted by Ecovidrio, a non-profit entity responsible for managing glass container recycling in Spain. This initiative aims to recognize the commitment of the hospitality sector and municipalities to environmental protection and sustainable development.
Carmen Pozo, the delegate for Environment, explained that the campaign, in its seventh edition, highlights the efforts of local hospitality businesses and coastal municipalities towards circularity, particularly in waste management during the summer season. The local government has reiterated its interest in promoting recycling and city cleanliness.
In this edition, 45 Andalusian municipalities and over 120 across Spain have joined the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes. Ecovidrio's campaign partners with city councils and hospitality businesses to address the high consumption of glass containers in coastal areas during the summer.
During the summer months, one-third of glass containers in circulation are consumed, and nearly 50% of single-use glass container waste is generated by the hospitality sector, underscoring the importance of such initiatives.
