Under the title 'Current Challenges and Future of the Fishing Sector: Sustainability, Market, and Innovation,' the conference is organized by the Fishermen's Guild with the support of the City Council, through the Delegation of Agriculture and Fishing. The opening will be led by the mayor, Carmen Álvarez, and the guild's senior patron, Antonio Romero.
The event, taking place from 09:00 to 16:00 at the former headquarters of the Fishermen's Guild in Bonanza, will feature participation from representatives of the General State Administration and the Regional Government of Andalusia. Speakers will include Elena Consuegra, Director of the Environmental Coordination Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, and Marcelino Bilbao, Deputy Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development.
The conference will be structured into four thematic blocks. The first will focus on the state of the fishing grounds, with presentations on stock assessments of key species like Norway lobster, the fishing reserve in the Guadalquivir River estuary, and the Bicharraco project on biodiversity.
The second block will address fisheries management, including European regulations, the sector's socio-economic situation concerning fuel costs, and the Fecomar Network. The third block will be dedicated to innovation and the environment, covering topics such as more efficient and sustainable trawling, the Lonjas 4.0 project for modernizing fish market management (using Galicia as an example), the conservation of endangered species with the SOS Caretta project in the Gulf of Cádiz, and the Redes de Cádiz initiative on circular economy.
Finally, an open debate will be held on the future of the fishing sector from an Andalusian perspective. The City Council thus reaffirms its commitment to the local fishing sector and the sustainability of the Gulf of Cádiz.
