On Friday night, Sanlúcar de Barrameda paid tribute to SalMarina, one of its most representative musical formations, by naming the roundabout at the end of La Calzada de la Duquesa Isabel promenade after the group. This institutional act recognizes the over four-decade career of SalMarina, which has carried the city's name throughout Spain as a benchmark for sevillanas and popular Andalusian music.
The mayor, Carmen Álvarez, presided over the event, accompanied by local government councilors and other authorities. Numerous representatives of Sanlúcar's cultural and social life, personalities from the music world, as well as family, friends, and residents, joined this recognition.
The three original members of SalMarina, José Antonio Martínez, José Antonio Conde Acevedo, and Juan Márquez, expressed their deep emotion and gratitude. Emotional moments also occurred with the speeches by María del Mar Martínez and Inmaculada Conde, daughters of two of the members, who recalled their fathers' legacy and the city's enduring affection. Musician and composer José Miguel Évora evoked the group's beginnings and the decisive impetus of their first album's production in 1984.
The mayor highlighted that "SalMarina represents an essential part of Sanlúcar's cultural identity." She emphasized that "their music has accompanied generations of Sanlúcar residents and has proudly carried our city's name throughout Spain with authenticity and deep respect for our roots." She assured that "it was only fair that Sanlúcar returned a part of the affection this group has always shown for its land."
To conclude the ceremony, SalMarina performed some of their most beloved sevillanas. Afterward, attendees shared a toast with manzanilla, courtesy of Bodegas Barbadillo. The City Council also thanked Cerámica Verónica for creating the commemorative tile.
The naming of this roundabout, located next to the Guadalquivir river and facing Doñana, is part of the municipal government's commitment to protecting, promoting, and recognizing local culture, honoring those who, with their talent and dedication, have enriched Sanlúcar's artistic and identity heritage.
