The U.S. military presence at Rota Naval Base is being consolidated, following an announcement by the Department of Defense seeking naval suppliers to support its fleet. This market study, preceding the maintenance contract renewal in 2028, dispels doubts that arose from geopolitical tensions and statements about a potential troop withdrawal.
Rota Naval Base, with 73 years of American presence, hosts approximately 3,000 U.S. citizens, including active military personnel, civilians, and their families. The U.S. Navy maintains five deployed destroyers, with a sixth unit expected by 2026, bringing the total associated personnel to 7,000.
“"The U.S. Navy seeks to identify qualified companies with the capability to perform a full range of naval repair services for naval forces deployed in Europe and Africa."
This announcement not only ensures the destroyers' continued presence but also provides significant work for the naval industry. The public company Navantia, responsible for maintaining U.S. vessels since 2013, is poised to be a key player in this process. The strategic contract with the US Navy, valued at over 800 million euros, guarantees activity until 2028 and generates nearly 1,000 direct jobs.
The arrival of the fifth destroyer, the Oscar Austin, and the future incorporation of a sixth vessel in 2026, have driven the need to expand the piers at Rota Naval Base. The Navy is preparing a major renovation of the facilities, which will include the construction of new ammunition depots and improvements to the fuel supply network, with an investment exceeding 300 million euros and a six-year execution period.
