Since its founding, Motril Acoge has provided support to nearly 10,000 people, offering employment and legal advice, as well as reception programs. Its work extends to raising public awareness and promoting an intercultural society, free from discrimination and respectful of diversity.
To celebrate this quarter-century of dedication, the organization has scheduled a series of events throughout 2026. Planned activities include human rights and migration conferences, photographic exhibitions, choral concerts featuring world music, the publication of a commemorative book, and the production of a documentary. Talks will also be held in educational centers, along with sports and environmental initiatives.
“"The association was born 25 years ago like a drop of water that is capable of crossing barren land to flourish and generate very positive values for citizenship."
Miguel Salinas, president of Motril Acoge, highlighted the importance of the volunteer network, totaling some 300 people over the years, who have been fundamental in overcoming difficulties and consolidating the association's work. For his part, Juan Manuel Ruiz, the association's secretary, detailed that the celebrations will begin this Friday with a talk at the Human Rights and Migration Conference at UNED Motril.
Jesús Villar, a member of the association, emphasized the need to listen to the stories of those who arrive from other countries and continents, often without material resources, but laden with emotional experiences. He stressed the importance of making them feel part of the community, recognizing that many young people born in Motril, whose parents are immigrants, are already Motrileños with the same concerns as the rest of the population.
“"Motril is a supportive, open, welcoming city, and that enriches us as a society."
The mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, announced that the City's Gold Medal will be presented to Motril Acoge on the upcoming City Day. This distinction, proposed by Izquierda Unida and supported by all political groups, recognizes the city's solidarity and the invaluable work of the association in welcoming people seeking a better future. The mayor also thanked the support of associations in addressing situations that the administration cannot handle with the same sensitivity.
