Almuñécar Expedites Aid for Peña Escrita Fire Victims After Two Years

The Almuñécar City Council will allocate 400,000 euros for affected farmers and youth housing, nearly two years after the devastating fire.

The Almuñécar City Council has announced the acceleration of aid totaling 400,000 euros, designated for farmers affected by the Peña Escrita fire and for young people's housing, almost two years after the incident.

Next August will mark two years since the forest fire that devastated El Rescate and El Cerval, in the mountains adjacent to Peña Escrita, in La Herradura. This natural disaster consumed 590 hectares of land, leaving a desolate landscape in the municipality.
The mayor of Almuñécar, Juan José Ruiz Joya, reported this Monday that the City Council will allocate 400,000 euros to two direct aid lines. One part will be directed to farmers harmed by the Peña Escrita fire, and the other will facilitate access to housing for young people in the municipality. This initiative was made possible after obtaining authorization from the Junta de Andalucía to assume these competencies.

The platform of affected individuals, which brings together about 200 people, has expressed its frustration over the slow arrival of solutions. Of the 400,000 euros, 100,000 euros will be specifically allocated to the repair of irrigation systems, pruning of damaged trees, and replanting, with a maximum amount of 3,000 euros per hectare and 10,000 euros per beneficiary.
The procedure to access these aids will be activated in the coming days. The City Council will approve the call for applications in the Local Government Board, and subsequently, the bases will be published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Granada, at which point the application period will open. Affected individuals can process their applications in person at the General Registry of the City Council or electronically through the municipal electronic headquarters.

Despite the announcement, not everyone is satisfied. Francis Puertas, local PSOE Organization Secretary and also affected, believes the aid comes too late. The City Council, for its part, has insisted that this initiative responds to its commitment to address a situation that directly affects residents.
