The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental has reported that the project, aimed at reinforcing water resource transport and distribution in the region, is advancing as planned. The president of the Mancomunidad, Manuel Cardeña, along with the delegate of the Junta de Andalucía Government in Malaga, Patricia Navarro, the mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, the mayor of Benalmádena, Juan Antonio Lara, and the CEO of Acosol, Matilde Mancha, visited the works.
In the municipality of Torremolinos, over 600 meters of mounted and covered piping have been laid, and pipe installation will soon begin in the Pinillo section, along with median repair on Alcalde Miguel Escalona Quesada avenue. In total, approximately 3 kilometers of the planned 5.8 kilometers for the route between both municipalities have been completed.
The project, with a budget of 13,668,764.98 euros co-financed by Acosol and the Junta de Andalucía, has an eight-month execution period and aims to resolve recurring problems and breakdowns in this section of the supply network.
“"This pipeline showed an unacceptable level of deterioration that led us, the administrations, to act urgently because the breaks these conduits were suffering could put people's lives at risk."
The commitment of the public company Acosol to the continuous improvement of hydraulic infrastructures has been highlighted, with the water highway being described as an essential action to increase the resilience of the supply system. The mayor of Torremolinos emphasized that the work is strategic for ensuring a safer and more sustainable supply.
Works in Benalmádena are focused on the secondary network on Rocío Jurado avenue, near the Tivoli parking area. Construction has been paused until September to avoid disruptions during the summer season, ensuring the fully renovated infrastructure is operational for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The new 800mm ductile iron main pipeline will be approximately 5.8 kilometers long, with about 1 km in Torremolinos and 5 km in Benalmádena. It will include three connections to municipal networks, and a reclaimed water network will be installed in parallel to reduce potable water consumption.
Due to the progress of works in Torremolinos, traffic diversions have been implemented on Antonio Márquez Muñoz street, and one lane per direction will be restricted on Alcalde Miguel Escalona Quesada avenue starting mid-June.
