The Torremolinos City Council has initiated the tender process for the demolition of the deteriorated and unused buildings located on the plot of the former Virgen de la Esperanza Children's Protection Center. This action, with a budget of 575,872.14 euros (VAT included), represents the first material step towards the development of the future social block in the El Calvario area.
The intervention will allow for the clearing and conditioning of part of the 15,420 square meter plot, ceded by the Junta de Andalucía, for new social facilities. The mayor, Margarita del Cid, highlighted that this tender "begins to make a reality a project we have been working on for a long time and which will allow us to recover a strategic space in the heart of El Calvario for the people of Torremolinos."
The works will focus on the elimination of unfinished and unused constructions, especially the building adjacent to calle Ecuador. These structures, due to unauthorized access, squatting, fires, and accumulation of waste, pose a risk to safety and health, in addition to hindering the plot's organization.
The demolition will facilitate the functional organization of the land and progress in the implementation of future public services. The main building of the former center, located on calle Honduras, will be preserved for subsequent rehabilitation and social use.
“"The demolition has a double importance: on one hand, we are resolving a safety problem that has concerned residents for years; and on the other, we are clearing the necessary space to begin defining a new network of social facilities for the entire city."
The future social block is conceived as an extension of the urban and social regeneration process in El Calvario, similar to the transformation of the former municipal market into the Isabel Manoja Community Development Center.
The aim is to consolidate a large public space dedicated to the attention, support, and well-being of people, responding to real needs and expanding municipal welfare resources.
