The municipality of Mijas has been awarded nine 'Q' for Quality Tourism and 'S' for Sustainability seals for its beaches, recognizing the continuous effort to maintain a top-tier coastline. The award ceremony, held in Marbella, was attended by the Minister of Tourism of the Junta de Andalucía, Arturo Bernal.
The beaches that have renewed these distinctions are La Luna-Royal Beach, Alhamar, Calahonda, Riviera, El Bombo, La Cala, La Dorada, El Chaparral, and El Charcón. Mayor Ana Mata emphasized that 'Mijas is tourist quality, quality of its people, quality of its tourist services, and of course, quality of its beaches,' highlighting the municipal commitment to making the coastline a benchmark for cleanliness, services, safety, and healthiness.
In addition to the 'Q' and 'S' recognitions, several beaches such as La Luna-Royal Beach, Riviera, El Bombo, and La Cala offer universal accessibility. Mijas also maintains its five Blue Flags for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, and has renewed the Sendero Azul (Blue Trail) distinction for the Senda Litoral (Coastal Path) and the Centro Azul (Blue Center) for the interpretation center of El Torreón.
Regarding safety, the full-time lifeguard service is operational from June 1st to September 30th, with a team of 62 lifeguards daily, reinforced by 24 support personnel, totaling 86. This deployment, awarded to Socorrismo Málaga for 1.56 million euros annually, includes a multilingual public address system for emergencies and equipment such as an ambulance, jet skis, bicycles, a rescue buggy, and a rescue drone.
The mayor also highlighted that 90% of the lifeguard service staff are residents registered in Mijas, reaffirming the council's commitment to local employment.
