Officers from the Local Police were patrolling the entrance to Playa del Cristo, which also serves as the access road for an exclusive beach club. They stopped two men of North African origin after spotting them enter a car that had previously been flagged to the police.
During the identification of the vehicle's occupants, officers discovered an international search and detention warrant against one of them, issued by Belgium. The individual, who had been on the run since July of the previous year, was wanted for alleged crimes of terrorism and against persons.
The National Police later confirmed the details of the case, stating that Belgium was the requesting country and that the detainee was subject to a 'return decision'. The second man in the vehicle also had police records linked to terrorism, but as there was no active warrant against him, he was not detained.
During the vehicle search, officers found a Spanish national ID card (DNI) and a disabled persons accreditation card belonging to a third individual, the presence of which neither man could explain. One of them stated he had entered Spain via Tarifa a few days prior and was traveling to Morocco.
The documents found have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation. The detained man has been transferred to National Police custody, where the process for his surrender to Belgium will now commence.
