The Spanish Government will contribute 9.5 million euros out of the 11.5 million euros required to build the athletics stadium in Nueva Andalucía. This amount represents 85 percent of the total investment needed to launch one of the most requested facilities by the district's residents.
The central Executive's investment comes from European funds. The Secretary General of the PSOE of Málaga, Josele Aguilar, stated that these funds allow for "moving forward with necessary investments for Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara," criticizing the Popular Party's attempts to hinder them.
The funding will enable the construction of a sports facility that the City Council presented in 2022 with a commitment to complete it in 2023. However, the works have faced various delays since then, forcing residents of Nueva Andalucía to travel to other sports facilities in Marbella or nearby municipalities.
The PSOE spokesperson in the City Council, Isabel Pérez, asserted that the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz (PP), had promised the project in 2026 without securing funding, and it has been the Government of Pedro Sánchez that has provided the necessary resources for its completion.
Currently, Marbella lacks an approved football stadium, an Olympic swimming pool, and an officially homologated athletics track.
