The impending closure of the C-1 commuter train line, which links the city of Málaga with the Costa del Sol, has sparked significant concern among the affected municipalities. This necessary interruption, aimed at improving the Málaga-Fuengirola line—the slowest in Spain—is expected to last for six months.
The mayors, all from the Popular Party, expressed their "surprise" and "concern" at learning about this measure through the media, without prior or confirmed information from the relevant authorities. This situation contrasts with institutional discussions initiated in July 2024, when a joint request was made to enhance this essential infrastructure for the local economy.
“"In their August response (of that same year), we were informed of ongoing studies, a commitment to hold technical meetings with the affected city councils, and a willingness to advance actions that would improve the line's capacity and reduce service frequencies."
The mayors, including Francisco de la Torre (Málaga), Margarita del Cid (Torremolinos), Juan Antonio Lara (Benalmádena), and Ana Mula (Fuengirola), underscore the critical need for technical planning, transparency, coordination, and timely information. This is due to the direct impact on the daily mobility of thousands of residents, workers, and visitors, as well as on tourism and the local economy, particularly for a line connecting to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport.
In their letter, the municipal leaders demand a comprehensive and detailed plan of the planned actions, including the timeline, phases, and specific periods when services will be affected. They also request precise identification of the affected stations, especially in Torremolinos, where the line has five crucial stops for local mobility. Furthermore, they urge to know the specific transport alternatives being considered to ensure mobility during the works, with a realistic and sufficient approach to absorb current demand, particularly during peak hours and high-activity periods, while guaranteeing accessibility and adequate connection with the rest of the metropolitan transport system.
