Titled Norma y Locura. El Hospital Psiquiátrico Provincial de Córdoba (1885-1931) (Norm and Madness. The Provincial Psychiatric Hospital of Córdoba (1885-1931)), the book offers a transdisciplinary review of legal, social, and clinical aspects related to the asylum practices of the era. The publication, now available, draws on admission records and clinical histories of individuals confined in the center, providing a historical overview of the organization of psychiatric assistance in the city during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
From a legal standpoint, the work examines the interaction between the history of madness, its legal status, and its place in the constitutional project, as well as the application of the judicial model of internment prevalent at the hospital. This model allowed for the admission of individuals without their consent until the 1980s.
In the field of psychology, the study addresses diagnostic and therapeutic considerations regarding the lived experiences of the confined individuals. It also analyzes how sexist perspectives of those in power, who codified norms and behaviors, applied differential criteria to men and women, highlighting the influence of ideological stereotypes beyond supposed medical objectivity.
The project is part of a collaboration agreement between the University of Córdoba and the Provincial Council of Córdoba. It was developed by researchers Judit Bembibre, Alicia Cárdenas, Ana Contreras, Naima Farhane, Auxiliadora Guisado, and Celia Prados, who coordinated the work. The initiative is carried out by the Leonor de Guzmán Chair of Women's Studies, adopting a gender approach as a transversal category in scientific discourse.
The work, published by Colex, is available in Open Access format. Its official presentation will take place on April 24 at 12:00 PM in the Library of the Faculty of Law, as part of the 'April in the Library' program of activities at the University of Córdoba.
