The month of July concluded in the province of Cordoba with 16 heat-related deaths, a significantly higher figure than in the same period last year. The initial data for August, which has just begun, are not encouraging, as the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Ministry of Health already reports two fatalities linked to high temperatures. Both victims were individuals over 65 years old, a man and a woman.
Since the beginning of June, the province of Cordoba has accumulated a total of 19 deaths attributable to heat, according to MoMo's records. Of these, the vast majority, 16, occurred during the month of July. In June, a single fatality was recorded, also a woman over 65 years old.
Regarding the 16 deaths registered in July in the province, nine were women and the rest were men. By age groups, eight of the victims were over 85 years old, seven were over 65 years old, and one person was in the 45 to 64 age range.
At the Andalusia level, the system has recorded 346 heat-related deaths since June. Across all of Spain, the figure rises to 3,078 fatalities in the same period. The month of July accounted for 2,206 of these deaths nationwide, representing a 91% increase compared to the same month last year, when 1,060 deaths were estimated. This July's figure is the second highest since the MoMo system began operating, surpassed only by July 2022, which saw an estimated 2,217 heat-related deaths.
