The proposal arises from recent graffiti affecting the emblematic monument and the frequent presence of pickpockets in the area, a popular tourist spot. The socialist group suggests that this measure be evaluated by the Management Plan Commission for the Historic Center of Cordoba.
According to the socialist spokesperson, the implementation of cameras, similar to actions taken in other cities in limited spaces, would require a request from the City Council and authorization from the Government Delegation in Andalusia. This process would include a prior report from the Video Surveillance Guarantee Commission, which would assess security, heritage protection, and citizens' rights.
The possibility of a trial period has been suggested to analyze the measure's effects and social acceptance. The dual purpose of these cameras would be to deter criminals and prevent acts of vandalism, in addition to supporting police operations.
The spokesperson highlighted that both robberies and vandalism are recurring problems in the area, and that the installation of technology, along with increased police presence, could be key to curbing these incidents that affect heritage and visitor safety.
