Following previous interventions on the roofs and initial cleaning, this new stage will concentrate on the rehabilitation of the interior of the San Nicolás Door vestibule and the Annunciation Chapel.
The work will cover an area of approximately 70 m² and includes the restoration of walls, arches, pavements, grilles, shafts, capitals, and cornices. Graphic surveys, material analysis, laser and chemical cleaning, fixation of disaggregated strata, injections, soluble salt removal, and the application of mortars will be carried out.
The project also involves replacing a damaged column in front of the San Nicolás Door with replicas, using a block of marble similar to the original sourced from a quarry in Almería. The original elements will be displayed in the vestibule.
“"Not only will one of the most beautiful and unique buildings in the world be recovered, but it also “reaffirms the commitment of institutions to work in unison on preventive measures for emergency situations in heritage assets”."
The fire, which occurred on August 8, 2025, at the San Nicolás Door, was quickly extinguished thanks to the intervention of the Fire and Rescue Service and the implementation of self-protection plans. The response was praised by various national and international institutions.
