The Provincial Historical Heritage Commission has favorably reported on the rehabilitation of the roofs of the Royal Monastery of San Jerónimo de Valparaíso in Córdoba. The intervention will focus on the areas surrounding the cloister and the north wing of the patio del Cervato, whose flat roofs are in an "advanced state of deterioration" due to multiple damages to their waterproofing and coatings.
The work will include the removal of deteriorated materials, regularization of slopes, and repair of walls and parapets. Cement mortars will be replaced with lime mortars, which are more compatible with the historical character of the building. The new construction solution will feature a double layer of modified bitumen, reflective insulation, and a ceramic tile finish.
The Commission specifically recommended the use of ceramic tiles in ochre tones, aiming for greater harmony with the historical materials of the complex and avoiding red finishes that could create an inappropriate visual impact in this heritage setting.
The intervention will be accompanied by preventive archaeological work to analyze structures and monitor the construction, documenting any historical evidence of interest. Notification of the start of works and a detailed report upon completion will be required.
The Royal Monastery of San Jerónimo de Valparaíso, declared a national historical-artistic monument in 1980 and an Asset of Cultural Interest, is part of the Archaeological Zone of Medina Azahara, a Unesco World Heritage site since 2018.
This complex, resulting from successive expansions since the 15th century, integrates a church, cloisters, and various dependencies, combining late Gothic elements with significant later Baroque reforms. Its three-story tower and cloister organization with valuable arcades are also noteworthy.
The authorized action falls under regional heritage regulations, which mandate prior authorization for any intervention on registered assets or their surroundings to ensure the protection of their cultural values.
The Regional Government of Andalusia has emphasized that these actions promote the conservation and maintenance of particularly relevant heritage assets, facilitating their preservation and transmission.
