The PSOE in Córdoba City Council opposes the new water tariff increase, which will be debated in the ordinary Plenary session next Wednesday, June 10. The socialists consider this measure to be "a new blow to the pockets of the people of Córdoba," criticizing that the mayor, José María Bellido, resorts to raising fees and tariffs to sustain his economic policy.
Socialist councilor José Antonio Romero stated that this increase, representing 2.1% for 2026, is not an isolated decision, recalling successive previous hikes. The Junta de Andalucía had already been forced to withdraw the increase planned for 2027 for not considering its joint processing appropriate, but the PP insists on the 2026 increase.
Romero described the decision as "unjustifiable," especially considering that Emacsa closed the 2025 fiscal year with profits of 1.10 million euros. The PSOE questions the need to increase the bill when the municipal company shows positive results and has sufficient margin for its operations without imposing additional costs on users.
Added to this increase is the debate on the rise in the waste collection fee, also to be discussed in the same Plenary. The socialist councilor criticized the PP municipal government for opting to "increase what residents pay" instead of seeking more efficient management or demanding funding from other administrations.
Furthermore, Romero recalled the water levy charged by the Junta de Andalucía, an additional cost that has also increased and whose collection should be used for hydraulic infrastructure. He pointed out that Córdoba does not receive a return proportional to its contributions, while other Andalusian provinces like Málaga or Almería receive significant resources for hydraulic projects.
As an example, he mentioned the storm tank under construction in Córdoba, an infrastructure costing over 20 million euros largely borne by Emacsa and, therefore, by the citizens. The PSOE believes the Junta should have financed this project more significantly with the revenue from the water levy.
The Socialist Municipal Group demands the immediate withdrawal of the water tariff increase and calls on the mayor to abandon a strategy of increasing economic pressure on families year after year, advocating for responsible management that protects citizens.
