The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) maintains a red alert in Cordoba until 20:59 this Tuesday, which resulted in temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. The Vega-Armijo station, located between Montoro and Villa del Río, registered 45.1 degrees Celsius at 16:50, marking the national high amidst a day of intense heat and humidity across the Cordoban geography. Numerous thermometers in the province exceeded 40 degrees, with Cordoba-Prágdena reaching 42.8 degrees.
This reading in the Alto Guadalquivir represents a new record for maximum June temperatures in Cordoba, surpassing by one tenth the previous mark of 45 degrees Celsius set at the capital's airport on June 26, 1965. These are the only two instances where the thermometer has exceeded this figure in this month since official data began.
The highest temperature ever recorded in the province remains higher, with 47.6 degrees Celsius in La Rambla on August 14, 2021, followed by 47.2 degrees Celsius registered at the same Vega-Armijo station during that extreme heat episode.
Aemet had previously warned that the highest temperatures would be concentrated in the Guadalquivir Valley. In Andújar (Jaén), the thermometer neared 44 degrees Celsius, while in Bailén, 43.4 degrees Celsius were reached.
This heatwave, marking the summer's arrival, has caused five consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the province. Higher temperatures are expected to continue on Wednesday, although Aemet has lowered the alert to yellow in the Campiña Cordobesa for highs of up to 39 degrees Celsius. Alerts are set to be lifted from the rest of the province on Thursday.
