Demographic indicators for Córdoba, published quarterly by the INE, show an alarming trend of population loss. Particularly worrying are the figures related to the child population and groups in the age range for starting families.
As of April 1st of the current year, the province had 97,965 residents between zero and fourteen years old. This figure represents a 10% decrease compared to five years ago, translating to a loss of 10,905 children. The proportion of this group in the demographic 'pie' has fallen from 14% to 12.7% during the same period.
“"The decrease in children is felt here, as in the rest of Spain, due to problems following the reduction in the number of newborns."
Another age group that has experienced a significant decline is that of 25 to 44 years, crucial for generational replacement and the formation of new families. This group has decreased by 8.8% in the last five years, losing 17,318 individuals and reducing its weight in the population pyramid from 25.4% to 23.3%.
This decline is significantly more pronounced in Córdoba than the national average, where the same age group only decreased by 1.4%. The structural weakness of the local economy, which drives youth emigration in search of job opportunities, is cited as a key factor in this trend.
In contrast, the population over 65 has experienced an 11.5% growth, adding 17,807 more people than in 2021 and reaching a total of 172,141. This group now represents 22.3% of residents, demonstrating a progressive aging process in the province.
