The province of Córdoba lost 983 inhabitants during the second quarter of 2026, bringing the accumulated decrease to almost 1,400 people since January, according to INE data.

The province of Córdoba continues to experience a population decline, with a decrease of 983 inhabitants recorded between April and June 2026. This figure, published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) in its Continuous Population Survey (ECP), brings the accumulated decrease in the first six months of the year to nearly 1,400 people.
The province's population drops to 772,913 inhabitants, a figure that contrasts with the national trend. Meanwhile, Spain has reached a historic population peak, gaining 104,178 inhabitants in the same period and exceeding 49.8 million residents.
Provisional data indicate that Córdoba had 774,309 inhabitants on January 1, a figure that fell to 773,896 on April 1 and to 772,913 on July 1. The loss of 1,396 inhabitants in six months consolidates a trend of demographic decline that has been ongoing for years.
The reduction of 983 inhabitants in a single quarter (April-July) is the largest recently observed for the province. The decrease affects both men, who went from 378,685 to 378,292 (393 fewer), and women, whose population fell from 395,211 to 394,621 (590 fewer).
Historically, Córdoba has experienced a continuous population decline since early 2013, when it was close to 800,000 inhabitants. In just over a decade, the province has lost more than 26,000 residents. The drop was more pronounced between 2013 and 2018, later moderating to a relative stability, but the latest data confirm a new setback.
This demographic behavior places Córdoba among the provinces with the worst records in Spain. Factors such as an aging population, low birth rates, and the emigration of young people to areas with greater economic dynamism explain this trend, which is the opposite of the national one, driven by a positive migration balance.
Nationally, Spain continues to grow, reaching 49,801,559 residents between April and July 2026, with an interannual increase of 444,205 people. All autonomous communities increased their population in the second quarter, with the Valencian Community, Balearic Islands, and Asturias registering the largest relative increases.
Population loss is one of the main challenges for the province of Córdoba, whose aging population, low birth rate, and exodus of young people hinder its demographic evolution, in contrast to the country's overall growth.
The INE data are provisional and will be revised, but they confirm the trend of population loss in Córdoba against the sustained growth of Spain.
