This year's edition of the Córdoba Guitar Festival featured the world premiere of the arrangement for guitar and orchestra of Manuel de Falla's work 'Nights in the Gardens of Spain', originally conceived for piano and orchestra.
This emblematic piece, initially conceived in 1909 as solo piano nocturnes and transformed in 1915 into a symphonic poem for piano and orchestra, was dedicated to pianist Ricardo Viñes, who suggested the orchestral adaptation to Falla. The work is presented in three movements: El Generalife, Danza Lejana, and En los jardines de la sierra de Córdoba.
Falla described the work as 'symphonic impressions,' seeking suggestive atmospheres and landscape evocations, in line with the impressionism of composers like Debussy or Ravel. It was premiered by pianist José Cubiles at the Teatro Real in Madrid on April 9, 1916.
Juan Manuel Cañizares, National Music Prize 2023, has spent a year adapting Falla's pianistic language to the guitar, exploring its sonic palette and incorporating flamenco resources, such as the sonorities of the taranta style. His version stands out for its guitaristic richness, use of rapid scales and arpeggios, and delicacy in melodic passages, demonstrating a mastery of 'cantábile' rarely found in flamenco guitarists.
Falla, influenced by flamenco and Spanish folklore through figures like Felipe Pedrell, integrated these elements into works such as Siete canciones populares españolas, El amor brujo, and El sombrero de tres picos, achieving a universally recognized sound.
Cañizares's version reveals a flamenco facet in the original work, enriching the guitar repertoire. The Orquesta de Córdoba, conducted by Salvador Vázquez, also performed Interludio y danza from La vida breve and Suites nº 1 and nº 2 from El sombrero de tres picos, with a notable castanet solo by José Rabasco Aguilar.
A reflection is raised regarding the festival's organization, suggesting the convenience of avoiding simultaneous programming of concerts in reference theaters to facilitate audience attendance.
