The challenge is not to live longer, but to live better: keys to healthy aging

Experts from the Pablo de Olavide University emphasize the importance of nutrition, exercise, and emotional well-being for a quality old age.

The true challenge of longevity in Spain is not just living more years, but doing so with autonomy and quality of life, according to experts from the Pablo de Olavide University.

Spain ranks among countries with the highest life expectancy globally. However, the current focus is on improving the quality of life during these additional years, promoting autonomy and well-being. This perspective is advocated by Griselda Herrero Martín, a professor in the Nutrition and Bromatology Area at the Pablo de Olavide University and director of the course ‘Nutrition, Movement, and Well-being: Keys to Healthy Aging’, held in Carmona.
Herrero Martín emphasizes that while genetics play a role, modifiable factors such as nutrition, physical activity, rest, and social relationships are crucial for healthy aging. "It's never too late—nor too early—to start taking care of yourself," she stated, highlighting that daily decisions have a significant impact on how we age.
The specialist points out that concepts like chronic inflammation, microbiota, and oxidative stress, although part of the body's normal functioning, can accelerate age-related diseases if they persist. Understanding these processes helps explain the effectiveness of lifestyle in preserving health.
Nutrition is fundamental, not only for weight but also for muscle mass, cardiovascular health, memory, the immune system, and autonomy. "Eating well does not guarantee healthy aging by itself, but it does increase the chances of achieving it," Herrero explained.
The relationship with food also evolves with age, influenced by retirement, loneliness, or emotional changes. Herrero Martín highlights the importance of emotions in eating, noting that we eat due to stress, boredom, or celebration, not just hunger. Identifying these situations promotes a healthier relationship with food.
Emotional well-being, social relationships, rest, and physical activity are pillars of healthy aging. "Aging well is not just a matter of years, but also of emotional and social well-being," she concluded.
Combating sedentary behavior is another key challenge, as reduced physical activity increases the risk of sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass that hinders everyday tasks. Quality rest is also vital for memory, the immune system, and mood.
Regarding nutritional supplements, Herrero warns about the need for caution and professional guidance, as they do not replace a balanced diet. The challenge is to know who truly needs them and which ones have scientific evidence.
Finally, the social image of aging is addressed, criticizing stereotypes that associate old age with loss of capacity. "The problem is not aging, but the prejudices that still surround this stage of life," she stated. Accepting bodily changes with respect and care is fundamental for well-being.
The course offered by the Pablo de Olavide University analyzes these factors from a multidisciplinary approach, aiming to contribute to more active and healthy aging.
