The monument to Rodrigo de Triana, located in Plaza Virgen de la Milagrosa, was removed this Wednesday by the Seville City Council. The objective is to create a bronze reproduction of the piece, which dates back to the seventies and was made of artificial stone by the Sevillian sculptor José Lemus. The bronze material will ensure greater durability against the deterioration of the original work. The new sculpture will be reinstalled in the same square, while the original piece will be relocated to another spot within the Triana neighborhood.
In parallel, the reordering and refurbishment of the entire square are underway. A wind rose will be incorporated to enhance the sculpture's prominence once it is replaced. The intervention will be completed with a new pedestal to elevate the sculpture and an ornamental lighting system to highlight its artistic and symbolic value.
These actions are part of a series of interventions in the vicinity of Pagés del Corro street, the main artery of Triana. These works are in addition to those currently being carried out by Emasesa on the same street to replace supply, sanitation, and street cleaning networks. The overall aim is to improve accessibility, quality, and the aesthetics of the public space, as well as to enhance the historical heritage of the area.
The council aims to revitalize this area, which is undergoing the second phase of works on Pagés del Corro, covering the section between Farmacéutico Murillo Herrera street and Victoria street. These interventions, with a total investment of 7,779,376 euros, are coordinated with the Urban Planning Department of the Seville City Council and include the renovation of paving and the construction of wider sidewalks, in compliance with accessibility legislation.
Emasesa's work on Pagés del Corro, Victoria, and Luca de Tena also involves the redistribution of parking spaces and tree pits, and the promotion of tree planting along this main street. The roadway width will allow for two-way traffic and, in certain areas, one-way traffic. Parking will be parallel, and the remaining space will be allocated to wider sidewalks for pedestrians.
Among the planned actions in the vicinity of Pagés del Corro, the restoration of the courtyard of the Church of San Jacinto stands out. This work includes improving the front space of the parish by remodeling the square, preserving its current exposed brick aesthetic and maintaining existing ceramic panels. Deteriorated or missing tiles will be replaced to conserve the heritage value of the complex.
Furthermore, the courtyard's pavement will be restored with new tiles honoring the brotherhoods that originated in this parish. The insignia of the Hermandad de la Esperanza de Triana, la Estrella, las Aguas, and el Rocío de Triana, which began their activities in San Jacinto, will be represented in this renovated space. The project will also include the replacement of the current enclosure with a new one, in keeping with the remodeled environment, and the removal of the existing tree stump.
Finally, the City Council will redevelop Gustavo Bacarisas street, a pedestrian street connecting Pagés del Corro with Génova street. The project includes the comprehensive repair of the sidewalk, the adaptation of the access area to the existing parking lot, the reorganization of spaces for motorcycle parking, and the refurbishment of flowerbeds. The monoliths on this street will also be reorganized to improve the urban image and pedestrian mobility.
