CHG Authorizes 50 hm³ More for Irrigation in October

The Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation will release an additional volume of water to meet agricultural needs due to scarce rainfall.

The Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation (CHG) has agreed to authorize a maximum additional release of 50 cubic hectometers (hm³) during October to cover irrigation needs.

This decision, made by the Standing Committee of the Water Release Commission on September 29, aligns with previous agreements that considered the possibility of releasing this extra volume based on rainfall in September and October. The General Regulation System, currently holding reserves of 3,899 hm³, has seen its stored volume decrease due to scarce rainfall in the Guadalquivir basin during September, which did not generate significant contributions to the reservoirs.
As of September 29, the volume released from the General Regulation System since April 16 amounted to 1,093 hm³, which is 107 hm³ less than the maximum authorized volume until September 30. Meteorological forecasts consulted do not indicate a clear probability of significant rainfall in the coming days.
The CHG's Exploitation Area, in collaboration with users, will plan the releases to optimize the response to the demands of the various irrigation communities. Until October 12, and given the persistent lack of rain, releases will be made daily. Subsequently, the most efficient method will be assessed based on water demands, the basin's situation, and rainfall patterns.
Additionally, direct abstractions from dams and reservoirs managed by the Confederation, belonging to the General Regulation System, may divert water independently. These abstractions for irrigation will be subject to compliance with authorized maximum allocations and ecological flow rates established in the current Hydrological Plan for the relevant section.
