The operation, set to take place over the next two weeks, aims to test the NATO Multinational Brigade in Slovakia, which Spain has led since July 2024. Around 1,600 Spanish military personnel will be deployed to Slovakia and Hungary. Participating countries also include the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Portugal, Romania, and Turkey.
Spanish military equipment initially departed from the port of Almeria, crossed the Mediterranean Sea, and arrived at the Slovenian port of Koper. From there, road convoys are transporting the equipment to military training areas in Lest (Slovakia) and Croft (Hungary).
NATO's Supreme Allied Command Europe (SACEUR) will use this exercise to assess the brigade's combat readiness, evaluating troop movement speed, supply management, and inter-country cooperation. The mission also aims to highlight Spain's growing role within NATO and its contribution to the protection of Eastern Europe.
The main Spanish unit involved is the 'King Alfonso XIII' Brigade of the Legion, based in Viator (Almeria), supported by additional Army units from across Spain. The logistical effort has been highly complex, involving maritime, land, and air transport, as well as coordination with NATO headquarters and several European national authorities.
The deployment is expected to be completed by May 24, at which point the multinational brigade will be fully operational under NATO command.
