The flames, which had wind as their main ally, were finally brought under control this Friday afternoon. Plan Infoca announced the fire's stabilization at 2:45 PM, ending hours of tension in the area.
An operation involving over a hundred personnel, including forest firefighters, technicians, environmental agents, medical staff, the Civil Guard, and Local Police from several municipalities in the Valle del Andarax, participated in the extinguishing efforts. They were supported by up to six aerial resources and water-spraying vehicles to prevent the fire's spread in a strategic area between the municipalities of Almería, Huércal de Almería, Benahadux, and Alhama de Almería.
The affected area is estimated to be over 1,000 hectares of scrubland and low forest, located north of the capital. The site known as ‘Las Minas’, with remnants of its mining past, has been one of the most impacted areas. The famous ‘vagoneta’ (mine cart) of Huércal and the El Pocico cistern have also been affected by the flames.
According to initial estimates based on satellite sources, the fire's extent would exceed 1,000 hectares, potentially making it the first Major Forest Fire (GIF) of 2026 in the province of Almería if officially confirmed. The scorched area covers more than ten square kilometers, a figure that highlights the incident's severity.
Personnel continue to work to fully control and extinguish the fire, which experienced a secondary outbreak on Thursday in Benahadux, caused by generators and quickly put out. Plan Infoca is thus preparing for a summer that is expected to be challenging in the province.
