The Provincial Council, the Junta de Andalucía, the City Council of Roquetas de Mar, and the Abuxarra Association presented the details of this edition, dedicated to writer and teacher Ana Sánchez Santiago and honoring the trovero Constantino Berenguer Puga. The event aims to rescue, preserve, and transmit the popular culture of La Alpujarra, looking towards the sea in a municipality with strong historical ties to the region.
The president of the Provincial Council, José Antonio García Alcaina, highlighted the pride in hosting the presentation in the Courtyard of Lights and emphasized institutional support for traditions. He noted that Roquetas de Mar becomes the 'home of La Alpujarra', recalling its welcome to thousands of Alpujarreño families since the 1960s. García Alcaina described the festival as one of the most important cultural events in Andalusia and recognized the work of the Abuxarra Cultural Association, awarded the Provincial Council's Medal of Culture in 2005.
The program for this 43rd edition will feature 29 music and dance groups with over 400 participants from municipalities in Granada and Almería. In addition to folklore, there will be an Agri-food Fair with about twenty stands offering products from La Alpujarra, including participation from companies of the ‘Sabores Almería’ brand.
The mayor of Roquetas de Mar, Gabriel Amat, expressed his honor in hosting the festival, highlighting the municipality's commitment to preserving its roots and welcoming visitors. He emphasized the collaboration between the Abuxarra Cultural Association and the Provincial Councils of Almería and Granada as an example of joint work.
The delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Almería, Francisco Góngora, stressed the festival's value as an expression of Andalusian cultural heritage and an example of tradition transmission. He assured that the Junta de Andalucía will continue to support initiatives that preserve identity and boost the region.
José Antonio Rivas, a member of the Abuxarra Association, explained that the choice of Roquetas de Mar is due to its commitment and historical ties with Alpujarreño families who migrated to the coast. He noted that the Roquetas Auditorium Theatre offers a top-tier stage with a capacity for 1,300 people, and attendance is expected to exceed 12,000 visitors.
Since its inception in 1982, the festival has aimed to rescue and promote the popular culture of La Alpujarra, fostering tourism and the creation of cultural groups. It has received distinctions such as the Provincial Council of Almería's Medal of Culture (2005) and the honorary diploma from the UNESCO Centre of Andalusia (2007).
This year's edition will take place at the Roquetas de Mar Auditorium Theatre on August 9th, featuring 29 groups (16 from Almería and 13 from Granada), totaling 498 musicians. The closing event will include the Trovo Inverso show. In parallel, there will be a trade fair with over 20 stands of crafts and agri-food products.
