The blaze, which ravaged the Los Grillos neighborhood in Níjar, not only destroyed the makeshift homes and basic belongings of the residents but also incinerated money, passports, and the documentary evidence many had collected for the upcoming extraordinary regularization.
“"Several of the people residing there are in an irregular situation with the expectation of extraordinary regularization. They had already collected the evidence to submit the documentation, and all of that is lost."
Izuzquiza, from the Jesuit Migrant Service (SJM), highlighted the profound desolation of those affected, who have lost everything. Although some documents like medical records might be digitally recoverable, other accreditations have been reduced to ashes, forcing them to "start absolutely from scratch with their passports."
The incident, reported to 112 around 2:15 PM, mobilized various emergency teams, including the 061 Health Emergency Center, the Guardia Civil, Firefighters, Infoca, Local Police, and Civil Protection. Initially, two men were confirmed affected, one treated on-site and another transferred to a medical center. However, NGOs on the ground assisted two additional victims who required urgent transfer.
One of the injured was admitted to Hospital Universitario Torrecárdenas with "relatively serious" burns, according to the SJM. Another critical case involved a person with diabetes who lost their medication, prescriptions, and health card in the fire, necessitating immediate medical intervention to ensure their treatment.
Following the disaster, the social services of the Níjar City Council activated the emergency residential facility in Los Grillos, where fourteen people from the settlement spent the night and were rehoused. Practical aid was coordinated by non-governmental organizations. The tragedy is compounded for some residents who were working in the agricultural campaign in Huelva at the time of the fire, thus losing "their home, their possessions, their clothes," including a vehicle "with its ITV and insurance" that was "absolutely incinerated."
