The incident, which occurred on one of the main entry routes to the city, resulted in considerable traffic complications and once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Algeciras bay road network to any disruption.
The mayor of Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce, emphasized the frequency of such events and stressed the urgent need for action on the road infrastructure in Campo de Gibraltar. "A single accident or breakdown is enough to severely affect traffic for hours. This situation repeats too often and shows the need to act as soon as possible," stated the mayor.
Landaluce recalled the high traffic intensity the region endures due to its strategic importance. This pressure has been amplified by freight transport related to railway works, increased travel during the summer season, and the Strait Crossing Operation.
In this context, the mayor reiterated his call for progress on proposed projects, such as doubling the North Access tunnel to Algeciras and widening the A-7 with a third lane between Algeciras, Los Barrios, and San Roque. He warned that their execution cannot be further delayed to ensure safer mobility and foster economic development.
