The political group believes that the Asociación Biodiversidad Huerta de las Pilas has demonstrated a firm and selfless commitment to the preservation of this area. Recently, representatives from the Junta de Andalucía met with the association to discuss the maintenance of the freshwater wetland.
During this meeting, the possibility of establishing a territorial custody agreement with the City Council was raised, which would allow the entity to carry out non-profit conservation, maintenance, and environmental dissemination actions.
“"The solution cannot solely be to collect trash periodically, but to provide the space with an effective protection figure and participatory management."
For the group, this agreement must be formalized “as soon as possible” to give the association a leading role in the management and surveillance of the area, especially given the future urban development planned for the western part of the city. The work of ecological and neighborhood groups in cleanup campaigns, where hundreds of kilos of waste have been removed, has been recalled.
It is emphasized that the wetland, included since 2022 in the Andalusian Wetlands Inventory, requires a Use and Management Plan to ensure its protection against urban pressure. Concern has also been expressed about the impact of the more than 2,000 homes projected in the expansion of the nearby San Bernabé neighborhood on this biodiversity-rich ecosystem.
