The Popular Party of Algeciras will bring a motion to the Plenary Session on April 20 to request support for the creation of a Special Economic Zone in the Campo de Gibraltar, with the aim of fostering economic development and job creation in the region.
The Popular Party's proposal is based on recognizing the strategic role that the Campo de Gibraltar region plays in southern Europe. Its privileged location in the Strait and its relevance in major international maritime routes, along with the activity of the Port of Algeciras, one of the most important on the continent, and a powerful industrial, energy, and logistics network, make it a fundamental enclave.
Despite its potential, the political party points out that the region faces significant challenges in terms of employment, investment attraction, and economic diversification. Therefore, they consider it essential to advance measures that contribute to its growth and social cohesion.
The motion highlights that the Campo de Gibraltar is surrounded by territories with differentiated fiscal and regulatory frameworks, such as Ceuta, Gibraltar, or Tangier, which already have specific instruments for attracting economic activity. In this regard, the Popular Party positively values the technical study prepared by the Campo de Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce on the viability of this initiative, considering it a rigorous basis for its promotion.
The Popular Party calls for consensus for the City Council to show its interest in promoting this initiative. Likewise, it urges administrations to advance in its legal, economic, and fiscal development, and to promote spaces for institutional collaboration to continue strengthening the strategic infrastructures of the region.
