The A-7 highway, one of the most problematic stretches of road in the Campo de Gibraltar, was the scene of a new traffic accident this Saturday. The collision, registered around 2:00 PM at kilometer 1.113 heading towards Málaga, involved a car and a truck, causing significant traffic jams.
The incident occurred near Palmones, within the municipality of Los Barrios, shortly after the same area experienced a major traffic collapse on Friday. Traffic Civil Guard officers were dispatched to the scene to manage traffic and set up alternative routes, aiming to minimize the impact on drivers.
The recurrence of these incidents highlights the vulnerability of the A-7, an infrastructure that handles traffic volumes far exceeding its design capacity. The high density of vehicles, combined with the intense logistical activity of the Port of Algeciras, increases the risk of collisions. Stretches like Palmones, Guadacorte, and the North Access to Algeciras are frequent sites of accidents and delays.
Local administrations and neighborhood groups have been demanding investments for years to expand the highway's capacity, including the construction of a third lane in each direction and a comprehensive reform of the North Access. Meanwhile, drivers in the region continue to face kilometer-long traffic jams due to any incident.
