Since last February, the installation of a traffic light on the N-340, near the Mirador del Estrecho, has led to significant traffic jams, particularly exacerbated on holidays such as May 1st. The municipal leadership criticizes the lack of visible progress on the promised roadworks in the area.
“"We continue to demand a solution for the problem we have on National Road 340. We have a very big problem."
The situation directly affects residents who commute daily to Algeciras, whether for work or to access essential services like the hospital. The municipal leadership has expressed frustration over the inactivity in the works, despite the traffic light regulation being in place for over three and a half months.
The economic impact is also considerable, especially with the high season approaching. Businesses in Tarifa are already experiencing reservation cancellations due to travel delays, a situation that could worsen with the increase in traffic volume during the summer.
“"There are many reservation cancellations due to the problems we are having, because of how long it takes to get from Tarifa to Algeciras because of this traffic light."
Given the lack of solutions, the municipal leadership does not rule out the possibility of carrying out protests on the road, in collaboration with the business sector, to demand a response and the start of works to resolve this issue. It is emphasized that the N-340 already has structural limitations as it is not a highway, which magnifies the effect of these incidents.
