During an official visit, the heads of the Chamber of Commerce and the Bay of Algeciras Port Authority highlighted the urgency of adapting the regulatory framework to the strategic reality of the territory. The main proposal focuses on creating a Special Economic Zone to attract industrial investment and promote advanced logistics, matching conditions with other nearby hubs.
The initiative does not seek exceptions to state aid rules, but rather to establish a technical dialogue to adapt successful instruments from other member states. According to the representatives, this measure is essential to consolidate the area's role following shifts in international supply chains and industrial development in northern Morocco.
Furthermore, port management focused on the impact of the European Emissions Trading System (ETS). A review of these regulations has been requested, arguing that the resulting costs are causing some shipping routes to shift to ports in third countries, which harms the activity and competitiveness of EU ports.
The meeting also served to review strategic projects such as the Green and Digital Corridor between Panama and Algeciras, initiatives supported by the EU to improve sustainability and digital interoperability in freight transport.
