The director from Algeciras, Ángel Gómez Hernández, is making a significant stride in his international career with the release of Crawlers, his latest venture into the horror genre. The film is set to hit cinemas in the United States on October 2, marking his most ambitious project to date, featuring a global production and nationwide distribution.
Initially known as Arachnid during its early development stages, the film will be distributed by Roadside Attractions and Saban Films. Both companies have praised its potential, describing it as an “as entertaining as it is terrifying” proposal capable of captivating audiences from the very beginning.
The plot of Crawlers, starring Matilda Lutz, known for her work in Revenge, centers on Serena, the manager of an apartment complex. The story unfolds with a mysterious death that initially suggests a viral outbreak, but quickly reveals a much more sinister threat: an uncontrollable plague of venomous spiders infesting the building.
The situation escalates to the point of a total quarantine being declared, transforming the property into a death trap. As the infestation spreads and the danger increases, residents must band together to survive in an increasingly hostile environment. In this context, Serena emerges as the key figure, using her knowledge of the building to protect others while confronting her own fears.
The film's screenplay was penned by Jayson Rothwell, and the production boasts an experienced team linked to major action franchises such as John Wick. Furthermore, Crawlers marks the debut of the Badlands label, a new collaboration in the film industry that brings together renowned producers.
