Adif Tenders Marchenilla Substation to Electrify Algeciras-Ronda Line

The 32 million euro investment aims to complete the electrification of the railway corridor, a key infrastructure for freight transport.

Adif has launched the tender for the construction and maintenance of the Marchenilla electrical substation, located in Castellar de la Frontera, with an investment of 32.36 million euros, crucial for the electrification of the railway section between Algeciras and Ronda.

This project, with an execution period of 24 months, is fundamental for providing power to the catenary of the Bobadilla–Algeciras corridor. The infrastructure, planned since 2011, had been postponed due to budget cuts resulting from the economic crisis.
The contract, co-financed by European Feder funds, covers both the execution of the works and the maintenance of the substation and the associated autotransformation centers along the railway corridor. This section is considered one of the most important logistical axes for freight transport in southern Spain.
The planned electrical system for the section will be 2x25 kV in alternating current at 50 Hz. This technical solution allows for optimizing the distance between substations, reducing energy losses, and improving the stability of the electrical supply on the line. The Marchenilla substation will be powered from the Castellar de la Frontera facility (Red Eléctrica, 400 kV) and will feature 400/2x27.5 kV transformers of 30 MVA, in addition to 10 MVA autotransformers distributed along the route.
The project also includes the control building, medium voltage systems, catenary and feeder gantries, earthing networks, drainage, lighting, fire protection, and security systems. Environmental, geotechnical, and railway interoperability studies are also contemplated.
The scope of action covers the entire electrical area 412, from the Serranía de Ronda to Algeciras, with planned centers in Arriate, Ronda, Jimera de Líbar, Cortes de la Frontera, Jimena, San Roque, and Algeciras, in addition to Marchenilla. These facilities are essential for distributing energy to the catenary and ensuring the operation of future electric trains on the corridor.
The electrification of the 176-kilometer section between Bobadilla and Algeciras represents one of the strategic actions of the Spanish railway system. Its commissioning will allow the circulation of electric freight and passenger trains, improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. This project is part of a broader modernization plan that includes track renewal, signaling, communications, energy remote control, and infrastructure expansion, with investments already exceeding several hundred million euros.
