The incident occurred at kilometer marker 63 of the A-381 highway, connecting Algeciras with Jerez de la Frontera. A large-tonnage truck suffered a breakdown or accident, forcing a complete closure of the road and affecting the return of many drivers on Friday afternoon.
Traffic cameras from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) captured the moment the vehicle caught fire, prompting alerts due to the initial traffic collapse. Initially, the closure affected both directions of travel, trapping hundreds of vehicles and causing tension among travelers.
“"The closure is extended to both directions"
Assistance and obstacle removal efforts allowed for a gradual reopening. Authorities prioritized clearing passage towards Campo de Gibraltar. Subsequently, the carriageway towards Algeciras was reopened, although the closure in the direction of Jerez de la Frontera persisted, slowing down the return home.
Late in the afternoon, cleanup operations enabled the opening of one lane towards Jerez de la Frontera, though progress is slow. This incident adds to other traffic disruptions planned in the area, so caution is advised when traveling around Alcalá de los Gazules.
