The terminal APM Terminals declared the palm oil spill, which occurred on Monday morning at the Port of Algeciras, under control. The emergency, which happened during unloading operations of a container, was officially deactivated at 7:00 PM after an intensive day of work.
Of the total 22,000 liters spilled, 12,000 liters were recovered directly from the sea. The remaining product was managed at the dock using absorption systems with sepiolite, a material effective in retaining oily substances. All collected residue was stored in spill containment barges for subsequent treatment.
Specialized companies participated in the cleanup, deploying high-vacuum trucks and two barges equipped with marine absorption kits. These measures helped limit the spill to the area near the dock, preventing further expansion into port waters.
Environment agents and representatives from the Junta de Andalucía supervised the operations. Although the emergency has concluded, the terminal continues to monitor adjacent areas for any remaining spilled material.
