Alexis Morante, a filmmaker originally from Algeciras, has built a distinctive cinematic career, characterized by an incessant search for authentic emotion. From his first steps, influenced by cinema in a Seville theater, Morante has shown a tenacity that has led him to work with major figures and earn international recognition.
His filmography, ranging from documentaries to feature films, reflects a constant exploration of human truth. An early example of his talent was a mini-documentary about his mother's birthday, which, it is said, deeply moved his family audience. This episode marked the beginning of a career where emotion would become his hallmark.
It was a lifelong love.
With a Grammy to his name and several nominations for national awards like the Goya, Morante has avoided pretense in his work. His focus is on the genuine, regardless of whether he collaborates with rock stars or professional actors. This philosophy led him to the United States on a scholarship, where he worked in Los Angeles with Enrique Bunbury, the iconic former leader of Héroes del Silencio.
The collaboration with Bunbury was crucial, opening doors to directing music videos. Alongside a team of Andalusian professionals, such as Diana Sagrista (winner of a Goya for Best Sound), screenwriter Raúl Santos, and cinematographer Juanma Carmona, Morante found success and the reward of artistic experimentation. A half-hour music video for Bunbury, nominated for a Grammy, confirmed that music could be a path to authentic cinema.
His foray into feature film fiction came with El universo de Óliver, a fable inspired by his childhood in Algeciras, addressing the theme of loss. Subsequently, he directed ¿Es el enemigo?, a film about the Civil War that transformed the teenager Miguel into the comedian Gila, premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
Currently, Morante continues to intertwine his documentary and fiction work. His musical docuseries Acoustic Home T4, for HBO and Sony, features artists like Amaral, Rigoberta Bandini, and Arde Bogotá, exploring their intimacy in emblematic Andalusian settings, such as the scarlet lands of Riotinto or the ruins of Baelo Claudia. He recently premiered the romantic comedy A una isla de ti, set in the Canary Islands, with an original idea by Fernando Pérez and starring Toni Acosta.
