The initiative aims to ensure water supply for the Genil-Cabra irrigation areas and restore the reservoir's flood lamination capacity. Furthermore, the motion proposes prioritizing this action over the construction of the future San Calixto reservoir, which could flood thousands of hectares in the same area.
A municipal spokesperson highlighted that the current situation of the Cordobilla reservoir is “critical,” as it has lost almost all of its storage capacity, dropping from 34 cubic hectometers to just 0.2. This reduction eliminates the possibility of regulating floods from the Genil River, posing a serious risk of inundation for Puente Genil and its villages in the event of torrential rains.
“"The reservoir has completely lost its water storage capacity, going from 34 cubic hectometers to 0.2, thus eliminating the possibility of flood lamination from the Genil River, which poses a serious risk of flooding in case of torrential rains."
The motion also urges the Ministry of Sustainability to collaborate in designing environmental measures that facilitate dredging, prioritizing people's safety and maintaining the economic activity of irrigation in the Campiña Sur. Additionally, it requests the central government to change the regulations in the Waste and Contaminated Soils Law to exclude sedimented sludge from reservoirs and irrigation canals from being considered waste, allowing its sustainable use to improve agricultural soils.
The municipal leadership recalled that, during a recent storm episode, the Iznájar reservoir did not release water, and the floods were mainly caused by contributions from the Anzur and Lucena rivers to the Cordobilla reservoir. At that time, the flows were close to overflowing the river's protection riprap in the urban area of Puente Genil.
It has been noted that the environmental improvement and social and economic use works for the Cordobilla reservoir, planned by the CHG with an estimated investment of 3.6 million euros, have not been executed. The only actions carried out have been emergency works, considered insufficient to mitigate the integral silting problem. The municipal leadership has requested a meeting with the presidency of the CHG to address this issue, which they consider of vital importance for the region and the province.
