The political group Adelante Izquierda Gaditana (AIG) has expressed concern over the conditions of new social housing in the Los Chinchorros development, arguing that this model excludes those who should be its primary beneficiaries: working families in Cádiz.
The criticism follows the testimony of a family registered with Procasa who, despite stable incomes, was forced to reject one of these homes. The initial outlay of 74,000 euros in 17 months, coupled with the uncertainty of a future mortgage, makes access to these properties unfeasible.
“"What we are seeing in Cádiz is an absolute perversion of the concept of social housing. It cannot be that social housing functions in practice like market-rate housing, with economic demands that expel middle and low-income families."
The group has also criticized the housing policy of the Junta de Andalucía, accusing it of “abandoning its responsibility to guarantee real access to housing” and allowing developments that, under the guise of social housing, respond to “speculative logics.”
The rejection of the housing decree-law 1/2025 by the Junta de Andalucía has been reiterated, which expands the income limit for accessing social housing up to seven times the IPREM. This modification, along with the possibility for these homes to transition to free-market rental after seven years, is seen as a “worrying shift in focus.”
The coalition warns that this situation is serious, as Cádiz faces the risk of losing significant state subsidies if its population drops below 100,000 inhabitants. Every family forced to leave due to a lack of affordable housing represents a blow to the future of the city.
