The 2022 regional elections brought unprecedented results for the Popular Party (PP) in the province of Cádiz. The popular candidacy, then led by Ana Mestre, managed to increase its parliamentary representation from 3 to 8 members, a significantly higher figure than in 2018. In contrast, the PSOE saw its representation reduced to 3 seats, one less than in the previous election, after obtaining 21.01% of the votes.
Vox maintained its 2 parliamentary seats, the same as in 2018, after securing 13.24% of the votes. The left-wing parties, Adelante Andalucía and Por Andalucía, each obtained one seat with 8% and 7.48% of the votes, respectively.
The PP's dominance in Cádiz was evident as it won in 40 out of the province's 45 municipalities, an unprecedented achievement for the party. The PSOE was the most voted party in four towns: Alcalá del Valle, Algodonales, Zahara de la Sierra, and Trebujena. Notably, Por Andalucía also repeated as the top-voted option in Trebujena.
The province of Cádiz has been highlighted in analyses of the current electoral campaign as a key territory for the PP to potentially secure its absolute majority in Andalusia again. The strength of the left in rural areas and previous results create some uncertainty about repeating the 2022 success.
Although a considerable advantage is predicted for Antonio Sanz, the PP's lead candidate in 2026, the question remains whether the party can maintain its 8 seats or if one of them, such as the one corresponding to Ascención Hita from Chiclana, could be at risk.
The PP of Andalusia has made a strong commitment this time, appointing Antonio Sanz, Minister of Health, Presidency, and Emergencies and a trusted figure of Juanma Moreno, as the number one candidate on the provincial list. This appointment marks Sanz's return to the Cádiz list 14 years after his last appearance in 2012.
In the 2022 elections, participation in Andalusia stood at 58.36%, an increase of 1.8% compared to 2018. In Cádiz, 53.08% of the electorate voted, surpassing the 52.11% of the previous elections by 0.97%.
